Summary: The 30-Second Answer
  • Yes, Google Vids is free. Anyone with a Google account can generate AI video at vids.new on desktop. Since 23 September 2026 the model is Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash; before that it was Veo 3.1.
  • The free limit is 6 AI video clips a month on a personal account, shared with AI avatars. Clips run 3 to 10 seconds, so the ceiling is about one minute of footage. Under Veo 3.1 it was 10.
  • The “50” you keep seeing is credits, not videos. Personal accounts get 50 credits a month for voiceovers, images and drafts. Video clips come from the separate pool of 6.
  • Google AI Plus adds nothing for video. It gets the same 6 clips. The first paid tier that helps is Google AI Pro at 500 seconds a month.
  • Clips are 720p or 1080p, 24 fps, 16:9 or 9:16, with audio, and carry an invisible SynthID watermark.

Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash, the video model that needs a Google AI subscription in the Gemini app, has been free inside Google Vids since 23 September. No card, no trial, just a Google account.

What most coverage missed: free video in Vids is not new. In April Google gave personal accounts 10 free Veo 3.1 generations a month. The September launch swapped in Omni and 1080p, but Google’s current help center table lists 6 clips a month for personal accounts. Better model, smaller allowance.

Google’s announcement gives no number at all, so here are the real limits, what each tier buys, and how to spend six clips without wasting any. 👇🏻

What Google Vids Is Now

Google Vids is the browser video editor from the Docs and Slides family. Files live in Drive, several people can edit at once, and scenes are laid out like slides. Templates, stock media, music, screen recording and voiceover were already there.

AI clip generation arrived in April on Veo 3.1. The 23 September change moves it to Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash. Create AI videos makes a new scene from a text prompt, a photo or an existing clip, and Google’s post lists three new controls:

  • Scene extension that keeps lighting, character appearance and setting consistent.
  • Exact durations, so a clip lands on the length of your voiceover.
  • 1080p HD, both for new scenes and for upscaling older AI clips.

If you searched “Google Vids Veo 3”: Vids ran on Veo 3 and then Veo 3.1 until September, and it now runs on Omni 1.1. We covered the model itself, benchmarks and API pricing in our Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash post.

Google Vids Free Limit: 6 Clips a Month

Google’s help center has a table per account type. For a personal Google account:

  • AI video clips: 6 per month, combined with AI avatars.
  • Everything else AI: 50 credits per month. A voiceover costs 1 credit, an image generation or edit 1 credit, “Help me create” (an AI-drafted video) 5 credits, Slides to Vids with voiceover 5 credits.

Limits reset at 12:00 AM Pacific Time on the first day of each month. They do not roll over and cannot be shared.

There is no separate daily limit. The cap is monthly.

Why Some Sites Say 50 Videos

Two numbers got merged. The clip generation help page says “most users can generate up to 50 videos per month,” which describes work accounts. And personal accounts get 50 credits, which do not buy video clips. Check the account table and the personal figure is 6.

Google Vids Pricing by Tier

Google AI Plus6 clips/month, shared with avatars50 credits/month
Google AI Pro500 seconds/monthUnlimited voiceover, 30 images/month
Google AI Ultra 5x2,500 seconds/month300 images/month
Google AI Ultra 20x10,000 seconds/month1,000 images/month

Two things fall out of that table.

Plus is not a video upgrade. It sits on the same 6 clips as a free account. If video is the reason you would pay, the step is Pro.

Free counts clips, paid counts seconds. On a free account a 3-second clip and a 10-second clip each burn one of your six. So always generate at 10 seconds and trim in the editor. That gets you 60 seconds of raw footage a month. On Pro the math flips: 500 seconds is fifty 10-second clips, or a hundred and sixty-six 3-second ones, so shorter clips stretch further there.

How to Use Google Vids to Make an AI Video

  1. Open vids.new in Chrome on a computer and sign in. Google supports the two latest Chrome versions; other browsers may miss features.
  2. Pick Create AI videos from the start menu. The side panel opens on Create.
  3. Optionally add up to 7 reference images under Ingredients (a product, a logo, a character), or pick an Avatar, which brings its voice along.
  4. Write the prompt: subject, location, action, camera, lighting, dialogue, sounds, tone. That is Google’s own order.
  5. Choose Landscape or Portrait and set a duration from 3 to 10 seconds.
  6. Click Generate, then Insert to put the clip in your video.

Do not skip Insert. Session history disappears when you close the tab, and a clip you never inserted is gone along with the credit it cost.

The same page has three more tools, all drawing from the same six:

  • Animate turns a .jpg or .png into a clip. Describe only the motion (“the camera slowly pans right”), not the scene; Google warns that re-describing the image confuses the model. Crop to 16:9 or 9:16 first, or Vids adds black bars.
  • Edit changes a video you upload. Past 10 seconds, only the last 10 are edited. Uploading outside footage is blocked in the EEA, the UK, Switzerland, Illinois and Texas; users there can only edit their own generated clips.
  • Extend continues a clip from the current session (“then the cat walks outside”) with the character and lighting kept.

Getting the Most Out of Six Clips

Six attempts is not enough for trial and error, so move the trial and error somewhere cheaper.

  1. Lock the frame with an image first. Image generation costs 1 of your 50 credits, not a video clip. Iterate on the still until the composition works, then feed it to Animate.
  2. Write the sound into the prompt. Clips come with audio: engine noise, wind, dialogue. Leave it out and the model picks. If a clip plays silent, check the speaker icon on the clip’s track in the timeline before regenerating; Google calls out that exact issue.
  3. Go to 10 seconds every time. You are charged per clip, not per second.
  4. Insert what you like immediately. History dies with the tab.
  5. Use the credits for the rest. A voiceover is 1 credit, so 50 credits cover a lot of narration around one minute of footage.

For a one-off product teaser, an event announcement or a social clip, that is enough. For weekly output it is not, and the realistic options are Pro’s 500 seconds or running open-weight models yourself.

Download, Watermark, and Usage Rules

Downloading: from the File menu you can save the finished video as MP4 or GIF, export an MP4 to Drive, or send it straight to YouTube, where it lands as Private on your default channel.

Watermark: there is no visible one. Every frame carries SynthID, which you cannot see but Google’s tools can detect, so the clip stays identifiable as AI-generated. We explain how that check works in our guide to spotting AI content.

Rules: generation falls under Google’s Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy, and the help page says generated images and videos are meant for use within Vids, so the clip leaves as part of your video. On work and school accounts an admin can switch generative features off entirely; if you do not see the option there, try a personal account.

Mobile: you can watch finished Vids in a mobile browser, but you cannot create or edit.

Languages and Voiceover

Google says many AI features in Vids are English-only for now. The help page lists languages per feature: AI voiceover covers 23 languages and talking avatars 29, including Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Turkish, with Hindi on the voiceover list. Clip generation has no language list, so English prompts are the safe choice.

On 29 September Google moved Vids voiceovers and avatar narration to Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS. For consumers that upgrade is on Google AI Pro and Ultra first; the free launch post says it is “coming soon” across 100+ languages.

Where Vids Fits Among Free AI Video Options

After Sora shut down, free AI video meant three things: xAI’s “free to try” Grok tier with no published allowance, open-weight models like Wan on your own GPU, or a paid plan. Vids is the fourth, and what sets it apart is a written, countable free allowance from a major lab. Just note that the count went from 10 in April to 6 now: free tiers in this category shrink, they do not grow.

The rest of that landscape, including how to read any free tier before you upload a photo, is in our free AI video guide.

FAQ

Is Google Vids free?

Yes. Anyone with a Google account can generate AI video in Google Vids at vids.new, on desktop. Since 23 September 2026 the model is Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash. A personal account gets 6 AI video clips a month, shared with AI avatars, plus 50 credits for voiceovers, images and drafts.

What is the Google Vids free limit?

6 AI video clips per month on a personal account, combined with AI avatar generations. Each clip is 3 to 10 seconds, so the ceiling is about 60 seconds of footage. Limits reset at midnight Pacific Time on the first of the month and do not roll over. There is no separate daily limit.

How much does Google Vids cost for more video?

Google AI Plus stays at the free 6 clips. Google AI Pro gives 500 seconds of AI video a month, Google AI Ultra 5x gives 2,500 seconds and Ultra 20x gives 10,000 seconds. Workspace Business and Enterprise plans have their own, larger pools.

What are Google Vids credits?

Personal and AI Plus accounts get 50 credits a month for non-video AI features: a voiceover costs 1 credit, an image generation or edit 1 credit, Help me create 5 credits, and Slides to Vids with AI voiceover 5 credits. Credits do not buy AI video clips, which have their own monthly limit.

Can I download Google Vids videos?

Yes. From the File menu you can download the finished video as MP4 or GIF, export an MP4 to Google Drive, or export it to your YouTube channel, where it is uploaded as Private.

Does Google Vids use Veo 3 or Gemini Omni?

Since 23 September 2026 it runs on Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash. Before that, Vids used Veo 3 and then Veo 3.1, which gave personal accounts 10 free generations a month from April. The same Omni model requires a Google AI subscription inside the Gemini app, which is what makes the Vids route notable.
